1978 - 1979 Yamaha XS 650: FUEL PETCOCK (Fuel Tap) The Problems:THE FUEL TAP,
WHICH CONTROLS THE GAS SUPPLY FROM THE FUEL TANK TO THE CARBURETOR, MAY BE DEFECTIVE. THE TAP CONTAINS A RUBBER
DIAPHRAGM. IF A HOLE DEVELOPS, GAS MAY BE MISGUIDED AND MAY DEVELOPE IN TO IN A FUEL LEAK IN THE FUEL TAP HOUSING.

It's always a good idea to make sure all fuel system lines are in good condition while you replace your Yamaha
XS650's fuel tap. An inline fuel filter is also a welcomed fixture.
Further Notes: I have been reading around various sites looking for known problems with the XS650. The first part of
my journey led me to some information about keep close notice to the coils and plug wires. This is where a lot of sweet deals
happen on used motorcycle. Previous owner states "She won't fire". Even professional mechanics subscribe to the philosophy,
"If in doubt, replace it". But not with parts from a dealership. I am talking about parts from ebay and some of these sites
on the web that specialize in XS650 parts. Never give the dealership your money, when you can give it to someone that is just
as dedicated to that particular motorcycle as you are.
A quick google search for "Known xs650 problems" are all elctrical.
This does not mean the bike has bad electrics, however, my point is finding barn fresh XS650's with 3000 miles and a bad coil.
Anyone can easilly troubleshoot these issues with an ohm meter,but, once again, as cheap as parts are, when in doubt replace
it. Throw enough money at something and it will run. The good thing about this is, with ebay and XS650 only online shops,
you can replace a lot of things for little money.
