Hello Yamaha XS650 fans. get this, every motorcycle I buy, the first thing I do is order some stainless screws for everything
on the bike. Not to make it look trick, but to make it easy to assemble and disassemble. There is nothing I hate worse than
stripped phillips head screws. Once I get them off with the impace driver a set of stainless screws goes on. I also tend to
buy extras. I like to go over the entire bike to see what nasty old screws I can replace. In the respect of tradition
and keeping something original, respect. Duly noted, but, I don't think stainless screw kits constitute as "not stock". When
it goes in the musuem as a claimed original get an original screw kit, untul then, go stainless. Replace everything you can. Note:
Do not replace critical screws in other areas of the bike that may depend on a certain hardness of metal. Example: Don't replace
a foot peg or shock bolt with some hardware strore variety fasteners.
Some mild stainless fasteners will clean up the look of your engine and bike without making it look like a squid got
ahold of it.
For those stubborn screws that will not come off you need a "Impact Driver Wrench" No not an air ratchet, the thing you
hit with the hammer and it turns the screw. Always start with the biggest phillips head is the key, otherwise, easy out nightmare.
Start with the biggest head, concentrate on placement and give it a whack. People have been known to sell their bike because
of one frustrated screw they have stripped trying to use a screwdriver. No tool collection is complete untul you have an impact
driver wrench. Directions: Tap the largest bit in the phillips screw so it is snug. Now put the Impact Driver Wrench on
the bit and carefully turn the wrench till it snugs all the way to the left. While you are applying pressure turning it left
and pushing down, whack the end of the Impact Driver with a hammer. The force of the hit will loosen the screw if you started
with an over snug fit on the bit. Works 80% of the time.
